Method

  1. Wash the rice and cook it separately in water till soft and fluffy. Keep aside.
  2. Wash the toor dal and pressure cook with turmeric powder, salt and enough water till the dal turns soft and mushy. Mash lightly and keep aside.
  3. Finely chop the onion, ginger, garlic and tomato.
  4. Heat mustard oil in a kadai. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  5. Add the chopped onion, ginger and garlic and saute till golden brown.
  6. Add the chopped tomato along with coriander powder, red chilli powder and turmeric powder. Cook till the tomato turns soft and the oil separates.
  7. Pour this tempering into the cooked dal and simmer for 5 to 6 minutes so the flavours blend well, adding a little water if the dal is too thick.
  8. Finish with a spoon of ghee stirred through the dal, and squeeze in fresh lemon juice just before serving.
  9. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with the steamed rice.
