  1. Boil the potatoes till soft, then peel and mash them well, keeping some texture.
  2. Soak the chana dal for 2 hours, then pressure cook till soft and drain well.
  3. Cook the tamarind in a little water till soft, then mash and strain to get a thick tamarind pulp for serving.
  4. Mix the mashed potato, cooked chana dal and gram flour together with salt, and knead into a firm, bindable dough.
  5. Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape each into a round, slightly flattened tikki.
  6. Heat the oil on a tawa and shallow fry the tikkis on medium heat, pressing lightly, till both sides turn golden and crisp.
  7. Plate the hot tikkis, drizzle the tamarind pulp generously on top.
  8. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.
