Kandathipli and Arisi Thipli Rasam is a Tamil specialty rasam built on a freshly-ground spice powder of kandathipli (long pepper), arisi thippili (rice-shaped long pepper), chana dal, carom seeds (ajwain), black peppercorns, and curry leaves. Simmered in tamarind water with turmeric, asafoetida, and finished with mustard-cumin-red-chilli ghee tadka. Light, peppery, and digestion-aiding — served as a drink or alongside steamed rice and cabbage thoran.

  1. To begin making the Kandathipli and Arisi Thipli Rasam recipe, dry roast kandathipli, arisithipli, chana dal, carom seeds, pepper and curry leaves.Grind it to a fine powder using mortar pestle.
  2. In a saucepan, combine hing, diluted tamarind water (1 cup), salt, turmeric & curry leaves on medium heat.
  3. Next add the freshly ground rasam powder made with Kandathipli and Arisi Thipli , 1/2 cup water and bring it to a boil.
  4. Switch off once the rasam is frothy.
  5. Once it is done, add coriander leaves.
  6. Finally heat ghee in a tadka pan.
  7. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and red dry chilli.
  8. Allow the mustard seeds to crackle, turn off the flame and add the tadka to the piping hot rasam.
  9. Serve Kandathipli And Arisi Thipli Rasam on its own as a drink or along with Steamed Rice and Cabbage thoran for a weekday meal.
