  1. Soak the toor dal in hot water for 30 minutes; drain well.
  2. Grind the soaked dal coarsely with the dry red chillies and a little salt, using very little water, into a thick grainy paste.
  3. Grease a steamer plate, spread the ground dal, and steam for 10-12 minutes until firm. Cool and crumble into small pieces.
  4. Chop the French beans and cook them with turmeric and a little salt until just tender.
  5. Heat coconut oil in a kadai; add mustard seeds and urad dal, let them crackle and turn golden, then add curry leaves.
  6. Add the crumbled dal usili and saute on low flame for 3-4 minutes until dry and slightly crisp.
  7. Fold in the cooked beans; mix gently and adjust salt. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice and mor kuzhambu or sambar.
