Maharashtrian Varan Phal

Varan Phal is a one-dish Maharashtrian dal-with-dumplings — yellow toor (arhar) dal simmered with kokum for sourness, jaggery for sweetness, mild spices (mustard, turmeric, red chilli), and finished by adding rolled diamond-shaped wheat-flour "phal" (dumplings) that cook in the dal. A hearty, sweet-tangy-spicy comfort meal traditional in Konkan-Maharashtrian households; served as a complete one-pot meal.
